Pony Penning

Pony Penning is always held the last full week in July. During Pony Penning week several events take place.
  • Southern Roundup
  • Northern Roundup
  • Beach Walk (where Northern herd walks along the beach to join the Southern herd in the holding pens)
  • Pony Swim to Chincoteague & Parade through town to the carnival grounds
  • Foal Auction
  • Swim back to Assateague

July 28th Vet Check/Buyback Selection
July 29th Pony Swim and Parade
July 30th Pony Auction
July 31st Return Swim

Spring Roundup

Spring Roundup is held in early April. The Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company announces the dates. The ponies are rounded up for spring shots and checkup. The previous year's buybacks are released on to Assateague after wintering at the carnival grounds.

Fall Roundup

Fall Roundup is held late September and sometimes leading into early October. The ponies are rounded up for fall checkup and the fall pickup foals must be picked up by their owners. The year's buybacks are brought to the carnival grounds for the winter.
