Buybacks are ponies sold by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company for the purpose of being returned to the feral herd on Assateague. The Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company retains ownership of the pony, the purchase price is a donation to the CVFC, and the purchaser is allowed to name the pony. Buybacks sell for high prices so groups often raise money to purchase one.
Chincoteague Legacy Group
​This is a group that was established for people who could not afford a buyback on their own.  Approximately 500 people donate every  year so the group can "buy" a buyback.  The donors all get to vote on what foal the group will attempt to get and what to name it.

Anyone is allowed to join as long as they obey the group rules
