The International Chincoteague Pony Association & Registry has officially partnered with Etalon Equine Genetics to advance the knowledge of Chincoteague Pony breed! Below is information on how you can identify your Chincoteague Pony's health, color, performance & ancestry with Etalon Diagnostics' comprehensive equine DNA testing.

Your Chincoteague Pony does not have to be registered with the ICPAR to be tested and included in Etalon's Chincoteague Pony DNA databank. All Chincoteague Ponies are welcome regardless of registration status or owner membership status.
How Do I Find My Ponies Relatives or Narrow Down Their Sire and Dam through DNA Testing?
The Ancestry testing will show your pony's relatives and create a family tree through the "find my herd feature". Your pony's family tree will automatically update as more family members are tested. ​Eventually the family tree will allow for parentage verification of ponies born on Assateague but it will take some time to test enough ponies in order have enough information to confirm parentage by siblings. 

There isn't a specific genetic marker unique to the Chincoteague Pony that can be used for DNA identification. A large variety of breeds make up the Chincoteague Pony so there isn't a specific breed mix that can verify a pony is a Chincoteague. Ancestry testing that connects with close family is the only way a pony can be DNA verified to be a Chincoteague Pony.
What does Ancestry testing tell us?
  • A individual pony's relatives to the third generation (blood relatives will show under the "find my herd" feature).
  • Helps narrow down a foal's sire/pedigree
  • Tells us the inbreeding coefficient value (genetic diversity in the pony)

How To Get Started
​​1. Create an Account
  • Visit this link to create your free account and order tests or or go to Etalondx.com to look at and order tests
2. Create a profile for your pony
  • List your pony's general information, picture, and other details.
  • At the bottom you can check whether or not for your pony's test results to be public or not. If it's public it's shareable! 
2. Choose your test:
We always suggest choosing the Registry Pro Package + Ancestry Bundle or just the Pro Package + Ancestry Bundle when possible as it will give you the most information about your pony!
3. Order and Pay online
  1. Print your submission form. 
  2. Pull approximately 40 hairs from the mane or tail. Do not cut to get the hair sample. The root must on the hairs. If your pony is less than 2 years old please pull from their tail. 
  3. Attach hair sample to form.
  4. Mail in your hair sample.
4. Get Your Pony’s Results
The ProPanels offer comprehensive equine DNA testing which includes an extensive genetic panel that provides a “whole pony” view focused on health and performance. You can also select specific tests if you know certain things you would like your pony tested for. Etalon’s live online reports make understanding your pony’s genetics simple and interactive.
Coat color, patterns, disease risk, temperament, abilities and performance genetic results are generally available 10-14 days after the lab has received the hair sample.
Ancestry composition results may take up to 6 weeks to be released.
