Training Hours Program

The International Chincoteague Pony Association and Registry’s Training Hours Program celebrates the athleticism and trainability of the Chincoteague pony.

Chincoteague ponies excel in a wide variety of disciplines, from casual trail rides to liberty work to the cross country field. Launched in early 2025, this program recognizes the work and dedication of Chincoteague pony owners and handlers, encouraging them to achieve their training goals.

Through the Training Hours Program, people who work with an ICPAR registered pony can earn printable certificates for each milestone reached:
  • 100 training hours
  • 200 training hours
  • 500 training hours
  • 1000 training hours
Milestone earners will also be featured on ICPAR’s website and social media accounts.
Participants can log hours for activities such as riding, driving, and groundwork with their pony. Routine, daily care activities such as grooming or bringing in the pony from the pasture do not count towards your hours.

This program works on the honor system. When you have finished a milestone, please send a scan or clear photo of your form(s) to
[email protected] with the subject line “Training Hours Completion" or use the "Submit Hours" link below.

Frequently Asked Questions
DOES GENTLING A WILD FOAL COUNT AS TRAINING?
Yes! Gentling a wild Chincoteague pony foal—getting them accustomed to human touch and farm life—is a rewarding process that sets a pony up for success. Your time spent gentling a wild foal counts towards the Training Hours Program.
WHAT IF MULTIPLE PEOPLE WORK WITH ONE PONY?
Each individual who works with the pony must fill out their own form. The pony must be registered with ICPAR.
WHAT IF I HAVE MULTIPLE REGISTERED CHINCOTEAGUE PONIES?
You will fill out a form for each pony. In other words, each pony/person team receives its own form.
I’VE ALREADY SPENT A LOT OF TIME TRAINING MY PONY. DO THOSE HOURS COUNT?
No, you may not backdate hours. ICPAR will only accept training hours completed after the formation of the Training Hours Program.
MY PONY ISN’T REGISTERED WITH ICPAR. CAN I STILL PARTICIPATE?
The Training Hours program is only available to ponies registered through ICPAR. You can find more information on how to register your Chincoteague pony here.
