Buybacks are ponies sold by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company for the purpose of being returned to the feral herd on Assateague. The Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company retains ownership of the pony, the purchase price is a donation to the CVFC, and the purchaser is allowed to name the pony.
Buyback donors are not eligible to register their buybacks through normal registration so the ICPAR will offer buyback certificates to buyback donors in the near future. The certificate for buyback donors does not constituent ownership of their buyback, but represents their donation to the feral CVFC herd. The buyback registration certificate designates the pony is a buyback, shows the selected name, includes the ponies details and linage, lists the CVFC as the owner, and the donor name(s) listed as the buyback donor. Certificates are available for both living and deceased buybacks. Buyback ICPAR numbers are prefixed with BB. Foster horse sponsors of the Maryland Assateague Horses are not eligible for buyback certificates. The fee for purchasing a Buyback Certificate helps support and grow the ICPAR!
